It's October and you can tell by the changing leaves and all the e-mail forwards urging you to buy pink junk food and pink plastic junk. Broadsheet already said it better this week than I could, as did (most especially) Barbara Ehrenreich's original article about the breast cancer awareness phenomenon. I am sick of being manipulated and marketed to, in regard to a major women's health issue. Breast cancer awareness efforts have had a positive impact on the social and economic disparites in research and treatment, in the developed world anyway. But I reserve the right to be sick of all the crap (hand lotion, barbies, candy, perfume, shoes, costume jewelry, puff paint sweatshirts, salty snacks, hair dryers and jewel encrusted tote bags to put it all in) touted as lifesaving. I think I'll just buy the regular chips and dip and donate directly online, thanks.

Interesting review of "This Is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel Levitin.

"Humans prefer music of their own culture when they're toddlers, but it's in our teens that we choose the specific sort of music that we'll love forever. Oooaaaaaauuuuuugghhhoooh my eyes. I have just spent several hours catching up on quality time with the Internet, doing lady stuff, while baby sleeps and Mr. McDonell is off doing man stuff, which probably involves gambling and/or meat. We returned from vacation last weekend and I am avoiding dealing with the photos. Work was bizzy this week and I thought about my favorite patriots on July 4 (statue type: Thomas Paine; running mates '08: Russ and Tammy). I looked through my old photo albums of that family vacation in third grade to Washington D.C. where I met the Constitution and took that picture with my fingers like little bunny ears behind its head. Good times...oh, Connie, where have you gone? Are you in the witness protection program now? A little late: my new favorite commercial is adidas' jose +10 part 1 and part 2. Soccer is totally hot. Nice music. I visited all my friends in the Internet tonight, but I still owe you all some comments.

(Well, she wouldn't actually refer to a blog, because I'm not entirely sure she knows what a blog is; however, that is pretty much how she would respond to a similar critique.) A-NY-WAY, I've been very busy trying to get ready for VACATION, so it's been a while since I rapped atcha. I just wanted to tell everyone that for the next week I will be in Maine doing my best to keep the lobster men in shiny new traps and bigger boats. "Lobster men" meaning people who get lobster out of the ocean so I can eat it, not necessarily this guy or this guy, and not necessarily men. Mmmmmmmm crustaceans. So, Internet, I will miss you. This certainly isn't news anymore, but in the past month, Wisconsin's legislature succeeded in adding another question to the November statewide ballot: Should Wisconsin reinstate the, get this, DEATH PENALTY? Oh, I don't know, since 1853 our government has not been allowed to kill people. I'm not sure how we've gotten by.

Unlike the Wisconsin-constitutional-amendment-to-ban-gay-marriage question (vote no), this one is non-binding; however, we are well on our way to the totally f*cked up November ballot triple crown. So I'm taking suggestions. What else should Wisconsin place on the ballot?

Last year before Eleanor was born, I took a belly dancing class with my sister Erin and our friend Juscha. It was pretty fun and relaxing. Then Eleanor was born and I never took any more classes because, you know, no time, bla bla bla. But Juscha continued taking classes and she informs me that her class is going to be performing at the upcoming renaissance faire in nearby Cambridge. So Erin and I are going to go see the performance and check out the faire, being careful not to call it a FAIR, because a FAIR has carnies, but a FAIRE has both jousters and jesters. (Here is the stated weapons policy for this event: Firearms not permitted. Blades must be kept sheathed and peace-tied. Other weapons must be sheathed and peace-tied. Erin was a little disappointed at the amount of peace-tying required, but SAFETY FIRST.) I've never been to one of these things before, and in spite of the fact that I've never really understood the desire to re-enact historical events in this manner, it should be pretty entertaining.

Make-a-flake is downright hypnotizing. The little scissors make a satisfying little "snip" sound when you snip the virtual paper. So I was roller-skating down the street the other day, listening to my Walkman(R) and eating a jar of peanut butter with a spoon, like I do ALL THE TIME, and this dude just steps right in front of me. We totally collide and his chocolate bar of all things ends up right in my jar of peanut butter - RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. The worst part, however, is that he was wearing cowboy boots with satin running shorts. Give me a break. Well, I skated away as fast as I could with the dude's chocolate bar still sticking out of my jar of peanut butter and then I threw the whole thing in the first trash can I could find. Who knows where that chocolate had been.

The McDonells have all had some very nasty cold for the last two weeks. (It's so nasty, it makes Janet Jackson blush.) Eleanor has become terrified when we blow our noses. Madison's "very own" Russ Lieber was a guest on the Colbert Report Wednesday night. I started this post right away but the video wasn't up yet. I think Russ was totally awesome, and he mentioned the Mifflin Co-op. Of course he couldn't say hi to me on camera!

Also, I don't know how Russ Lieber is ever going to show his face on the radio again after the way Stephen whitewashed him during their live debate. Whitewashed him like a big old fence, which then subsequently had several nails driven into it! And following that, the fence was hung out to dry so the whitewash wouldn't get on people's hands when they touched it -- Stephen's as courteous as he is merciless!

As if Stephen's head could get any bigger, I think this blogger is a little rough on Russ, though. I mean, COME ON! We all know it's really just Stephen's interns who maintain that blog, GIVE ME A BREAK--Russ' show on WORT is the best thing going!!! He speaks truth to power and don't you forget it. He also has a really good kale puff recipe.

Dear Project Runway,

I totally HATE Santino (San-MEANO!). He is like the biggets terd. He is mean and is just scared of people that are smarter than him. (If I were Stephen Colbert I would put him on my "Dead to Me" board.) He also has gross hair. I am sad that Diana got cut becaue she had some big ideas. I also miss Daniel Franco. He was nice to everyone and wished for Bliss that is totally nice. I think now I want Chloe to win. I like the buterfly mousepointer I downloaded from Heidi's web site.
